The Coolest Automotive Toyota FJ Cruiser 2009

Automotive FJ Cruiser primairly competes with the Nissan Exterra, Jeep Wrangler and the Honda Element. Many enthusiasts of the original FJ series Land Cruisers have been very vocal in their opposition to the new vehicle, decrying not only its long wheelbase, but its lack of both a diesel engine and solid front axle as well. At 183.9 inches in length, the FJ Cruiser slots between the smaller RAV4 (181.1 in. overall length; originally rumored to be replaced by the FJ Cruiser) and the mid-size Highlander (184.6 in. overall length).

The addition of the FJ Cruiser adds a sixth SUV in Toyota's American lineup, meaning Toyota will have two compact SUVs (the RAV4 and FJ Cruiser), two mid-size SUVs (Highlander and 4 Runner), and two full-size SUVs (Land Cruiser and Sequoia). It is also Toyota's only vehicle in its current lineup to use the name "TOYOTA" spelled out across the grille like older Land Cruiser models such as the classic FJ40 the automotive FJ Cruiser is loosely based on, as well as other Toyota models from the past.

The automotive FJ Cruiser is the modern reincarnation of the legendary "FJ" series of Toyota's Land Cruiser. The old FJ 4x4 was known for its rugged capabilities and durability and has become a very popular classic SUV. In keeping with its 40 year-old namesake, the eye-catching FJ Cruiser delivers solid off-road performance and ranks near the middle of its class.

If you want to stand out from the crowd and can live with some interior nits, the new FJ is a solid choice. Upon its introduction, the automotive of Toyota FJ Cruiser quickly wowed critics with its out-of-this-world looks and impressive off-roading performance. In fact, it ranks highly when compared to other off road SUV’s It also rates well in on-pavement driving. The Washington Post calls the FJ "a motorized conundrum, a marvelous bit of engineering at once simple and complicated, capable of conquering the most inhospitable terrain but actually designed to appeal to the outdoor fantasies of the urban elite." Still, the retroo-styled SUV's low points are a cramped rear seat, poor visibility and sub-standard interior materials.

Automotive FJ Cruiser does exactly what it's supposed to do: excel as a top-notch off-roading machine. But it's a decent enough performer on the pavement -- even though others in the class have smoother rides and quieter engines -- and its performance ranks in the top half of the class.

The 2009 Toyota FJ Cruiser midsize SUV comes in one body style, essentially a two-door SUV with a pair of smaller, reverse-opening doors behind the standard front ones. There is a single trim level that comes with 17-inch black steel wheels, a two-tone exterior paint scheme, air-conditioning, a six-speaker CD/MP3 stereo, power windows and locks, eight-way manual adjustment for the driver seat and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Options include a convenience package that includes keyless entry, power side mirrors, cruise control, rear privacy glass and rear park assist. There are also two "Upgrade" packages that add features such as alloy wheels, a locking rear differential, an upgraded audio system with a six-CD changer and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, a 115-volt power outlet, active traction control (4WD models only) and an information display that includes a compass and inclinometer. A Garmin portable navigation system that mounts above the gauges is now available. This year's new All-Terrain package in automotive toyota FJ Cruiser includes special 16-inch wheels and all-terrain tires, Bilstein shock absorbers, an additional engine air filter and a locking rear differential that's optimized with the stability control system for better rock-crawling performance.

This is the one of consumer review :

  • Jacklyn from Utah

  • "I bought my automotive Toyota FJ Cruiser 2008 last oct 2007. Have had nothing but fun since. But mine is stock. First time I've had a rear locker and there is no where I can't go. Don't have a lift have't needed one. West Utah desert and San Raphel Desert are my best stomping grounds. Wife loves to drive it to work. Only real draw back is that the gas tank could be bigger. 20 mpg and 19 gal don't last long Would buy another one."

The automotive Toyota FJ Cruiser is definitely a better deal than its main rivals if true off-road ability is your thing. Of course, its extroverted looks mean it will also be popular among urban poseurs too, even though its hard plastic interior and blind driving position make it an annoying vehicle to take to the mall parking lot. However, whatever practicality it offers is welcome if the FJ is expected to pull double-duty as a weekend runner as well as a weekday commuter.
